A new report by the American Association for Education and the American College of Pediatricians found that American schools have “the highest rates of teen pregnancy, sexual assault and sexually transmitted infections among developed countries.”
The AAP’s report comes as educators across the country have been facing intense pressure to address the issue of sexual assault in schools.
On Tuesday, the AAP released a report on sexual assault, which was also released on Wednesday.
The report focused on what the AAP called “the most pressing and persistent challenges facing schools,” including the lack of funding for sex education, which the report identified as one of the main drivers behind the increase in sexual assault.
“There are hundreds of thousands of students in American schools,” said Julie Geller, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has long pushed for greater sex education.
“It is the job of educators to do everything possible to help students who are sexually assaulted and are struggling with sexual assault prevention.”
But while the AAP report acknowledges the need to address sexual assault on campuses, it also warns against assuming that the issue will magically disappear if schools become more sexually diverse.
It notes that even the report’s own “safe spaces” have been identified as a “significant contributor to the increase” of sexual assaults in American public schools.
“Schools have a role to play in addressing the epidemic of sexual violence and harassment, including addressing the role of sexual predators in the school climate, and developing strategies for dealing with such issues,” the report says.
The AAP, however, did not provide a list of schools where it thinks the issue is most pressing.
For the report, it surveyed more than 100,000 students in over 300 public and private schools in the U.S. and Canada.
It also surveyed teachers across the United States, with a sample of over 6,000 teachers from more than 5,000 schools.
The AP also looked at how students felt about their school’s sexual assault policies, including the policies surrounding harassment, bullying, and sexual violence.
While the AAP’s findings suggest that there are still a number of ways to address student safety, the report notes that schools should be working toward making sure that students have access to education on a variety of topics.
“We know that education is a crucial part of ensuring the safety and well-being of all students,” said Jessica Rosenblum, president and CEO of the Association of American Schools.
“Teachers can and should work to improve the sexual harassment and sexual assault education that they provide to their students.
This includes a wide range of materials that students can access to better understand sexual assault.”
The AP found that only 14% of teachers reported that sexual assault had an impact on how they teach.
A majority of teachers also said that their schools had a positive sexual harassment policy.
And the report found that most teachers said they believe that students should be given the option to report sexual harassment in a timely manner.
“Many students feel that sexual harassment is something that happens to them on a regular basis and that they do not have a choice to report it,” the AP said.
“The best way to make a difference in the lives of students and their families is to ensure that their safety is protected.”
